Small Music Ensemble

Who can sign up?

Students ages 10- 17 (exceptions may be considered) who have played an instrument enough to have developed an interest in applying their skills and collaborating with other students in a group setting.   Acoustic and electrical instruments including keyboard, violin, clarinet, trombone, guitar, bass, piano, voice, and percussion are welcomed.  Bring your own instruments and music stands, and cords if necessary.  We will provide the sound system and a limited number of stands for mics and guitars.

How long is each class and how many classes per week?

45 minutes, once a week

What will students do in this class?

  • They will bring examples of music they enjoy, which can be from a wide variety of genres, and examine what makes them compelling.

  • They will choose one piece together to deconstruct and then reconstruct by re-arranging or composing new material to make it into something new.

  • This process gives them the opportunity to learn the skill of collaboration, a skill that is highly sought after, especially with competition and extreme self-reliance being the norm in our society.

  • They will collaborate to create and rehearse new music.

  • Through this process, they will learn musical concepts including harmonic progressions, texture, voicing, and instrumentation

When are classes held?

Wednesday afternoons / early evenings

What do I do next?

  • Sign up by the registration deadline: August 18th, 2021

  • Attend the Orientation from 5:15 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18th. This is really important as it allows us to arrange students into groups that are the most beneficial in terms of experiences, instrumentation, ages, etc.

  • Please plan to be there by 5 to set up and warm up your instrument.
